Look
French manicures are classic favourites, which leave you looking stylish and well-groomed. here’s a diy guide to get that nail-bar look right at home.

Some good things never go out of fashion — the French manicure is one of them. Elegant and chic, it is apt for the professional-day look or the dressed-up late night party. The French manicure keeps things simple and stylish.

Here’re the basics: a French manicure is all about keeping your nails well-groomed and painting them in such a way that the tip is white and the rest of the nail is covered in very pale pink, beige or peach shades. There are assembled French manicure kits available in the market which can make your job easier or if you want to treat yourself — get it done in a salon.

Exfoliate
For either manicure or pedicure, prep your nails by removing the old nail polish first.
Exfoliate your hands with a good quality body scrub. Rinse with water and dry thoroughly. If you are planning on doing a French pedicure, soak your feet in warm water for some time and exfoliate them with a pumice stone. While this step is not necessary in a French pedicure, it will pamper your feet and make them look better.

Prepare
File your nails in either a square shape or with a smooth rounded edge. While a square shape makes it easier to apply polish more accurately, the rounded edges are more successful with brittle nails. While filing, always move in one direction otherwise your nail can be damaged.

Soften
Apply a good moisturising lotion to your hands or feet and cuticle oil on your nails. Wrap them in cling film or a warm towel for 10 minutes. This will help soften and nourish your hands and feet. After 10 minutes, remove the towel or cling film and tend to your cuticles. Carefully clip the dead skin around your cuticles with a cuticle clipper. Remove the excess lotion so that your nails are dry.

Polish
Apply the base coat on your nail, keeping it thin and even. Wait until it dries. Peel off a guide strip and fix it below the tip of a nail, following its natural curve. The guide will allow you to paint an even white tip with ease and precision.

For a square look, paint a straight line across the tips while, for a rounded appearance, follow the curve of the nail. Extend the brush stroke from the top of the guide to the end of the nail. Take care not to get any white polish on the body of the nail below the guide. Let the tips dry.

Finish
Remove all the guides and apply the translucent shade of your choice over the entire nail. Allow it to dry and apply another coat. If you want your French manicure-pedicure to last longer then apply a clear top coat for protection.
